Lonnie King is a seasoned broadcasting contractor and freelance writer with more than two decades of experience covering Houston-area sports. He recently wrapped up a ten-year run as the play-by-play voice for Houston Baptist University (now Houston Christian University), calling football, men’s basketball, and Southland Conference women’s basketball.

Since 2021, Lonnie has worked with Learfield Sports and the athletic department at the University of Houston, broadcasting women’s basketball and serving as a baseball play-by-play voice for the UH Cougars. Additionally, he has filled in on Rice University Learfield broadcasts from time to time. His broadcast experience also includes college volleyball, high school football, baseball and basketball throughout the Houston area.

Over the years, Lonnie has contributed to regional outlets such as Legacy Sports Network, Texas Sports Productions, Texas Sports Radio Network, and FloSports, while also partnering with L2 Productions on ESPN+ broadcasts. Earlier in his career, he called high school football for LSN’s Comcast SportsNet Houston broadcasts and covered HBU and San Jacinto College events for Fox Sports Southwest and Fox Sports Houston.

Lonnie’s play-by-play work also includes assignments for:

  • UIL State Tournament radio broadcasts (basketball and baseball)

  • ISP/IMG (now Learfield) for Notre Dame baseball and University of Washington women’s basketball

  • Texas State men’s basketball for Learfield Sports

  • NFHS high school basketball broadcasts

  • LHSAA state baseball tournaments

Beyond the booth, Lonnie has written extensively about Houston’s sports scene and authored travel features for local audiences. He spent a decade covering high school sports and reported on the Sugar Land Skeeters during their first two seasons of minor league play. He also writes about workplace issues, with two books currently in development for publishing: Say What You Mean (When ‘That’s Not My Job’ May be the Right Answer) and Thriving Among the Time Wasters.

He also has a background in radio news, having delivered national weather updates through the Radio Forecast Network.

Lonnie holds a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of Arizona Global Campus, with previous academic stops at Texas A&M University and Arlington Baptist College.

Off-air, Lonnie is a proud husband, father of four, father-in-law, and “Grandpa” to his granddaughter Aviva. He and his wife Dawn, married for 37 years, enjoy exploring Texas on daytrips, channeling their inner Chip and Joanna Gaines on DIY home projects, and crafting with reclaimed wood.
